A Fleeting State of Mind Julia Mayer 9780991467709 Books
The main character of the book is a therapist named Dr. June Gray, a woman in her thirties who ironically suffers from her own depression and psychological issues. She’s stuck in a static relationship and her family isn’t incredibly supportive of her choices in life. Because of this, she lacks self-confidence, and therefore feels unable to do anything about her deadpan existence. The story follows her peregrination from depression as she finds different ways to move on from her old ways, meets new people, and gains more credence in herself. The main aspect that I love about this novel is how it delves into human interaction and how experiences are what makes you who you are. The main message of this story appears to be that confidence in yourself is incredibly important to being happy and successful. The book also shows how even the most confident people have their downfalls, though, because not every moment is going to be favorable for them. Overall, "A Fleeting State of Mind" is excellent, with fantastic themes and an intriguing display of character interactions.

A Fleeting State of Mind Julia Mayer 9780991467709 Books Reviews
A Fleeting State of Mind captures depression, anxiety, and other psychological issues with grace and sensitivity. No doubt because the author is a psychologist. Unfortunately, that's the only thing at which this book succeeds. A Fleeting State of Mind follows June Gray, a psychologist who is going through some serious problems in her life, and focuses on how she finds love in an unexpected place. However, author Julia Mayer perhaps focuses too much on June, which is a central problem with the narrative structure; its apparent case of narcissism. While it is written in third person, the prose only focuses on June's thoughts and emotions, never delving into those of the supporting cast. In fact, save June, the characters are all one dimensional, with flat personalities, overly simple motivations, and no flaws that can be resolved in a grand arc. The style itself is equally juvenile. The sentences have no variety and are choppy, leaving no room for clever transitions or a sense of any type of personality. These stylistic flaws could be overlooked if the plot was decent; unfortunately, it's contrived. Implausible coincidences occur simply to move the plot along, and the pacing was all over the place. This new way of getting your work out there-- self-publishing-- is a fantastic new wave, but one with faults. That is, if you have the money, you can publish anything, halfway decent or not. Such is the case with A Fleeting State of Mind, a psychologically sound yet juvenile piece of writing that is better served in a high school than the marketplace.
A friend of mine gave me this book after she found it at a thrift store. I had wondered whether she had anything I could read on my five hour flight. It is a great title but so boring and bland. The main character is self absorbed and the narrative is all of her obsessive thinking about herself and her judgment of her patients. A distorted portrayal for psychologists who truly care about their patients. The plot is ridiculously predictable. As the previous review mentioned, this seems to be written by a young person and or inexperienced writer. I left it in the back seat pocket of the plane.
I really enjoyed reading this book! It was engaging throughout and I finished it in two days. Dr. Mayer's background as a psychologist added a great level of depth and intricacy to the characters, who are all intriguing and realistic. Some, like the character Annabel, are comically dysfunctional. Others, like the protagonist June Gray, are just trying to find happiness. I would recommend this novel to anyone looking for a captivating read that will make you think about happiness and relationships, and how the two interact!
Very interesting perspective and an enjoyable read!
...the plot really kept my interest. The characters were so real and I loved how there were inserts describing different aspects of psychology. I wish the author had more books!
This is a unique novel about a practicing psychologist who has the same mental struggles as her patients. It is well written and the story keeps the reader both entertained and educated. The novel is structured to emphasize the main characters psychological insight and her "be happy" feelings. It gave me the impression that I was reading about Dr. Mayer's real life experience treating patients with depression. This book provides the reader a better understanding of how a well trained and motivated psychologist can help patients deal with their life struggles.
